Treating Neurodiverse Families: Affirming Care for Children and Parents

CE Hours 3

About this live event

This 3-hour continuing education webinar provides therapists with a strengths-based and trauma-informed framework for supporting neurodiverse families. Participants will deepen their understanding of neurodiversity—including sensory, cognitive, emotional, and learning differences—and learn how these variations influence child development, family dynamics, parenting stress, and mental health needs. The training emphasizes affirming care that honors neurodiverse identities, promotes nervous-system safety, and strengthens connection within families. Through case examples, clinical tools, and practical interventions, therapists will learn how to (1) support children through developmentally appropriate, regulation-focused strategies; (2) provide parents with psychoeducation, coaching, and reframing that reduce shame and increase attunement; and (3) navigate common challenges such as masking, executive-function struggles, emotional dysregulation, and sensory overload. The webinar will also highlight culturally responsive, neurodiversity-affirming approaches that help families thrive rather than merely cope.

Learning Objectives

  • Define neurodiversity and describe how sensory, cognitive, learning, and regulatory differences shape behavior, developmental, and family functioning.
  • Apply a neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed lens to conceptualize presenting problems in children and parents, including understanding how chronic stress, masking, and misattunement can compound symptoms.
  • Identify developmentally appropriate supports and interventions for neurodiverse children, including regulation strategies, sensory accommodations, learning supports, and communication tools.
  • Provide parents with effective psychoeducation and coaching to strengthen attunement, reduce shame-based narratives, support co-regulation, and build flexible, sustainable routines at home.
  • Collaborate with families to create individualized treatment plans grounded in strengths, needs, sensory profiles, and the unique dynamics of each neurodiverse household.
